The first thing that you learn in a language are the numbers, but sometimes we only learn the first ten or twenty and we have difficulties when we want to say the highest numbers. Saying numbers in Spanish is easier than you think if you keep reading you’ll see how easy it is to learn to say all the numbers in Spanish.
To facilitate the learning we will divide them into several parts:
The numbers from 1 to 29 are the following:
1 – Uno
2 – Dos
3 – Tres
4 – Cuatro
5 – Cinco
6 – Seis
7 – Siete
8 – Ocho
9 – Nueve
10 – Diez
11 – Once
12 – Doce
13 – Trece
14 – Catorce
15 – Quince
16 – Dieciséis
17 – Diecisiete
18 – Dieciocho
19 – Diecinueve
20 – Veinte
21 – Veintiuno
22 – Veintidós
23 – Veintitrés
24 – Veinticuatro
25 – Veinticinco
26 – Veintiséis
27 – Veintisiete
28 – Veintiocho
29 – Veintinueve
These numbers are the most used and they are the first numbers that you start learning Spanish. Let’s go to see the following ones.
40 – Cuarenta
50 – Cincuenta
60 – Sesenta
70 – Setenta
80 – Ochenta
90 – Noventa
The numbers from 30 to 99 are very easy, you only have to learn the tens and agree the rest of the numbers. They work like this:
tens (30,40,50,60,70,80,90) + y + numbers from 1 to 9
Let’s go to see and example:
45 = 40 + y + 5 / Cuarenta y cinco
91 = 90 + y +1 / Noventa y uno
First of all, look at how the following numbers are formed:
100 – Cien /ciento
200 – doscientos
300 – trescientos
400 – cuatrocientos
500 – seiscientos
600 – seiscientos
700 – setecientos
800 – ochocientos
900 – novecientos
To form numbers over 100 to 999 just follow the rule of numbers 30 to 99:
120 = 100 + 20 / ciento veinte
205 = 200 + 5 / doscientos cinco
235 = 200 + 30 + y + 5 / doscientos treinta y cinco
999 = 900 + 90 + y + 9 novecientos noventa y cinco
Exception: When you see 100, we must say cien, not ciento.
As you have seen before, first, you must learn these numbers and you will see how the sequence is very easy to learn:
1.000 – Mil
2.000 – Dos mil
3.000 – Tres mil
…
10.000 – Diez mil
20.000 – Veinte mil
30.000 – Treinta mil
…
300.000 – Trescientos mil
…
1.000.000 – Un millón
2.000.000 – Dos millones
—
50.000.000 – Cincuenta millones
…
600.000.000 – Seiscientos millones
Now that you have seen how they are formed, I’m sure you already know how numbers greater than 1,000 are said, just in case we’re going to give you some examples:
1.528 = 1.000 + 500 + 28 / mil quinientos veintiocho
1.999 =1.000 + 900 + 90 + y +9 / mil novecientos noventa y nueve
2.003 = 2.000 + 3 / dos mil tres
9.058 = 9.000 + 50 + y + 5 / nueve mil cincuenta y ocho
10.569 = 10.000 + 500 + 60 + y + 9 / diez mil quinientos sesenta y nueve
63.519 = 63.000 (63 mil) + 500 + 19 / sesenta y tres mil quinientos diecinueve
125.898 = 125.000 (125 mil) + 800 + 90 + y + 8 / ciento veinticinco mil ochocientos noventa y nueve
600.089 = 600.000 (600 mil) + 80 + y + 9 / seiscientos mil ochenta y nueve
5.638.058 = 5.000.000 + 638.000 + 50 + y + 8 / cinco millones seiscientos treinta y ocho mil cincuenta y ocho
As a curiosity, we have to know that the European numerical system (including the Spanish language) is different from the Anglo-Saxon one as you can see:
Spanish: One billion 1,000,000,000,000.
Anglo-Saxon countries: One billion = 1,000,000,000
The way to separate thousands and decimals is also different, in the Hispanic American countries we use the dot (.) To separate the thousands and the comma (,) to separate the decimals:
3.537,52 = tres mil quinientos treinta y siete con cincuenta y dos.
If, besides this numbers, you want to learn the ordinal numbers (1º, 2º …) check this entry.
Now that you know how all the numbers are formed in Spanish, you will never have any more trouble saying them again.
